Four days at Kenyon: When we want to capture the contemporary Kenyon in photos—touching on everything from students at work (and play) to the landscape in repose—we invite Howard Korn to campus. A photographer based in Baltimore, Maryland, Korn has a feel for Kenyon charm, Kenyon quirks... for the inimitable, ineffable Kenyonesque. Here's a small sampling of what he found during a four-day visit. Each of these images offers just a slice of life. But together, we think, they suggest something about the College's essence—how a small hilltop can body forth a world of intellectual and creative intensity.

Its the Little Things:

Paul Newman Photos: Peter Schroeder '50 was a near classmate of Newman and a fellow resident of the T-Barracks. Both were involved in college theater, and together they formed an intramural basketball team called The Barracks Boys that played against fraternity teams. After graduation, Schroeder studied photography at Chicago's Institute of Design, then made his way to New York City in 1953, just as Newman got his first big Broadway break in Picnic. Newman agreed to let his Kenyon friend photograph him in his dressing room and outside the Music Box theater. Over the years Schroeder photographed Newman on other occasions, including in his dressing room (with beer can in hand) during a performance of Baby Want a Kiss, in which he starred with his wife, Joanne Woodward. Schroeder has generously shared these rarely-seen photographs with the Bulletin.

Kenyon at Night: We invited photographer Megan Nadolski to spend a few fall nights in Gambier from sundown to sunup. Here, alongside the Kokosing (literally, the "place of owls"), Kenyon students inhabit a nighttime world filled with activity and contemplation, conviviality and solitude. Nadolski's photos are featured here and in the winter 2007 issue of the Alumni Bulletin.
